The Sandy River is classed as a Wild and Scenic River and is truly a pearl hidden only 20 minutes from downtown Portland, Oregon. The river offers winter and summer fishing for wild and hatchery steelhead, spring chinook, and silver salmon in the fall. Winter steelhead fishing starts in late November and fishes until early March. Big wild fish typically enter the river in February and run into March. The summer steelhead start showing up in March and fish best April through July. The river will turn off color due to glacial flower around July at which time your only option is to fish the Clackamas River. Conventional anglers fish the river to harvest hatchery fish stocks of salmon and steelhead that run up the river. Hatchery summer steelhead and spring chinook are prime eating fish. Angling pressure increases as the runs pickup and the weather gets better, so book your trip early to reserve your days. Steelhead weigh 8 to 12 lbs. on average but can go over 20 lbs... The spring chinook average about 15 lbs. but some will tip the scales at over 30 lbs... This is fishing!
